Week 11

Another week has come to a close and I see the end of the semester in sight. The semesters always seem to go fast and that is one thing I really like about BYUI - just when you've had enough and feel like you can't do it anymore it comes to an end.
This week we learned about the costs of being a business owner. It was interesting to hear what some classmates thought about the mini cases where someone had to choose work over family. For me some things were cut and dry but others had a completely different view of things.
In reading Attitude On Money by Stephen Gibson I thought many of his thoughts reflected my thoughts on money. Money itself is not evil and doesn't make a person evil. It is the worshiping of money that creates a problem. When we put too much emphasis on money it can be problematic. We all need money as part of life. Wanting to make a lot of money isn't a horrible goal; only if it's your only goal and everyone and everything else suffers because of it. We can use money to help our families and others who cross our path. Many are struggling and a little goes a long way for them. Using our money to bless others is one way to serve our fellow beings as we are commanded in the scriptures.
I probably value money too much and put too much emphasis on what it can do for me. It is hard not to compare ourselves with others that seem to have more and want what they have. We do need to learn to be happy and satisfied with what we have.
Gibson suggests a few rules for prospering and being successful with money
1. Seek the Lord and have hope in Him
2. Keep the commandments - including paying tithes and offerings
3. Think about money and plan how you will be self reliant
4. Take advantage of learning opportunities
5. Learn the laws upon which blessings of wealth are predicated
6. Help those in need

These are great suggestions and one that if we follow will not doubt lead us to healthier money attitudes and a more wiling and selfless heart.
